Diamond is the hardest natural material. That is quite a title: diamonds score a 10 on the Mohs hardness scale, a scale that ranges from 1, which is the softest and includes materials like talc, all the way to a 10. It is the molecular structure of diamonds that makes them so hard, with the carbon atoms arranged in a strong, tetrahedral structure, making diamond the least compressible and stiffest substance. In fact, diamonds can only be scratched or damaged by other diamonds; it this natural hardness which makes diamond ideal for polishing tools and industrial cutting, such as military materials like airplane components and armour. So, at least, if you decide to buy a diamond engagement ring, you wont have to worry about it getting scratched. However, although diamond is very hard, it is relatively brittle. As a result it splits along its crystal cleavage planes when receiving a certain impact.
If all else fails, take her to the jewelry store and have her select her own ring. She is the one who will have to wear it after all. Surprise her if you want to, but let her make the final decision of the ring she would like to have on her finger.
Another popular type of diamond cut for engagement rings is an oval cut diamond engagement ring. An oval cut is great for designs with a wide width band, or for a very large diamond. The oval cut diamond engagement ring gives a lot of sparkle, so if your girlfriend loves sparkly jewelry, this may be the perfect cut for her!
Near the Loch of Stennis, in the Orkneys, are two large circles that are sacred to the sun and moon. Only one hundred years ago, a maiden, who wished to be married, performed alone the circuit of stones dedicated to the moon, and the intended husband traversed the circle of the sun. Then the pair met at the stone of Odin, and in joining their hands through the matrimonial ring or hole in the stone, plighted their faith and became man and wife. A divorce was more simple, as the pair had only to go to church, and go out at different doors.
