Most of these rings were set in a bezel. This is probably the oldest setting for stones, and it is amazing to consider that this simple and versatile setting has been in use for thousands of years. A bezel setting consists simply of an elevated metal collar surrounding a gemstone. After the gemstone is placed in the bezel, the edges of the metal are pressed down over the edges of the stone, creating a rim that holds it securely in place. Numerous examples of this kind of setting can be seen in jewelry stores, and if you want to see ancient bezels in active use, many museums have a section of old jewelry which will often include bezel-set stones.
An engagement ring happens to be one of the most special peices of jewelry a woman could own. It does not only come with the value but also with a symbolic meaning. Traditional families used to pass it down from one generation to the next especially to those who adhere to be very traditional and customary beliefs. Selling these engagement rings are said to be a crime or even considered as a mortal sin.
The earliest diamonds were not nearly as brilliant as today's rings. The first mine cut diamonds were not very clear. This improved in the early 20th century with the European cut diamonds. These are often found in rings from the Art Deco period. Diamond cutting continued to improve and evolve into the brilliant cut that is still used today.
