This week's Dead show is more than just a classic 1977 show - its that for sure - and its much more than the first time we get an Eyes of the World going into an Estimated Prophet - although this show is the first time that happens too.. its the kind of magical, rocking, charging life affirming and soul-baring music that makes me fall in love with the Grateful Dead over and over again..There's plenty to love in this set - the fine Samson->Cold rain starts the set perfectly.. the Playin' in the b

I must say that my listeners are simply the best ! I received an simply perfect request this week for the show we're going to start listening to this week as I was casting about in my mind trying to decide what to play... and what a show it is. This show not only shows the band in a period of transition from their slower tempo early '77 style of playing to the more uptempo arrangements of 1978 but its simply one of the best shows of the entire year. The first set which we'll listen to this week,

Howdy Friends - no tricks this week - just a real musical treat - the remainder of the electric set from 10/26/80 at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, NY.. This is very fine set of music - Jerry is in very fine voice and Bob is *very* animated (in fact watch your speakers at the end of Good Lovin!!!!)..Althea, He's Gone, Stella Blue and one of the most beautiful Brokedown's ever highlight this spectacular set of classic Dead - I sure hope you enjoy it!!Grateful Dead10-26-80 (Sun)electric

I'm surrounded by beautiful Fall foliage here in Michigan this time of year and it brought to mind this quite remarkable period of Dead shows. I will never forget when I saw the Dead open up sitting around and playing accoustic music. I loved those shows, and unfortunately there aren't a whole lot of soundboards of complete shows from that period that are out but this is one and I hope that you enjoy hearing it as much as I do.Yes the acoustic sets may not have as much variety as we'd like - but

This week we get to listen to one of the best second sets that the band produced in 1983.. Each of these songs individually is played with a verve that will bring a smile to your face, but the totality, as is often the case with the Dead, is much more than the beauty of the individual songs.I could tell you how much I enjoy this particular china->rider, or the wonderful Space into the best St. Stephen of the last three the band played, but I'd rather you simply enjoy this set and the joy that I

First off I want to tell you all how much I value and appreciate your requests and comments! I wish I could play every one! I can't, but here's one I can, this week a request for a show from Hartford CT, back in 1983 - and this is a very very fine show.. We'll listen to the first set this week - this set is so good even the Day Job is a Keeper!!!Grateful DeadHartford Civic CenterHartford, CT.October 15, 1983Tuning-> Feel Like a Stranger Direwolf Minglewood Blue

this week's Deadpod features the 2nd set of this entertaining show from 9/24/91, Boston MA.Its one of those second sets that I really enjoy the song choices.. China->Rider is always a keeper, and Man Smart, Woman Smarter always got everyone on their feet! The Ship of Fools->Dark Star is fine as well. A rare Foolish Heart out of space, and one of these later day 'Standing On the Moon's that is very mellow.. The Weight encore caps a set that really does move my soul.9/24/91 - Grateful DeadBoston G

I've had some requests for some solo Garcia, or Garcia band, and I thought this show, which I recently came across, would be an interesting contrast with the 1974 show that we heard the last couple weeks. This too, is from 1974, but this is Garcia with Merle Saunders, at the Keystone in Berkeley CA. It's a whole different sound than the 'Wall of Sound' and certainly shows Garcia's unique ability to stretch out and explore and improvise in a whole other musical realm.. This week, the conclusion of their powerful set from 7/31/74. What a time to be a Deadhead! This show featured 3 powerful sets - this week we'll listen to the end of set 2, and all of set 3.. There's plenty of wonderful jamming and singing on these songs - I especially love the 'Ramble on Rose' and 'To Lay Me Down' - and be sure to listen to the 'Mind Left Body jam' after 'Truckin' - great stuff!! This week's Deadpod goes back to the fabulous summer of 1974 - I think its clear from listening to this show that the band is really putting out some fabulous music. Not only is the show distinguished by an opening Scarlet Begonias, but I think you'll agree that the China-Rider and the Eyes are distinguished by their intensity and beauty.. Those of you who follow the Deadpod know that I often prefer to play lesser known performances rather than very well known ones. There's often lots of surprises there to be heard - but there's nothing wrong with bringing out the well-known and loved dates sometimes either. This week I'm playing one of the those - this one a live "free concert" from the "hiatus" of 1975 - Sept. 28th, 1975 from Golden Gate Park. The difficulty here was in choosing between the sources - a very good audience or the

Somehow the fact that this is a partial show .. all that exists from a phenomenal performance - befits the significance of the date. I am honored to be able to keep bringing this music to you, my friends, and I hope as you listen to this set and reflect on Garcia that you feel the light of the love which is the Grateful Dead fill you. Happy Birthday Jerry!I decided against the idea of doing a Jerry "tribute" - heck every Deadpod is a tribute to the virtuosity and spirit of Garcia - he should still be with us - he'd only be 66 today...........this week I'm playing set 2 of 9/2/79 - Enjoy the fabulous Weather Report Suite and Garcia's intense jam out of that.. I don't need to tell you to listen to the Stella Blue.. :) Grateful Dead Augusta Civic Center Augusta, ME 9/2/79 - Sunday Samson And Delilah [7:29] ; Ramble On Rose [8:13
